Obituary of John E Bennett
John E Bennett of Whiting, NJ passed away on June 5, at Crestwood Manor. He was born in Manchester, England where spent his formative years before joining the Royal Air Force during WWII, and spent his campaigns mainly in India and Burma. After his military service, he attended nursing school where he met the love of his life and married Winifred A. Sharkey in 1948. They migrated to New Jersey in 1951 and started a new life, both working at Essex County Hospital, Cedar Grove, NJ where he was the Assistant Director of Nursing.
They raised 7 children; Paul, Valerie (his beloved daughter who passed away) John, Robert, Ronald, Theresa, and Brian. John was also a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, Whiting, and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Pines Council #9852.
After retirement, he and Winifred (Una) moved to Vero Beach, FL where they enjoyed their retirement until Una became ill, when they moved back to Whiting until her death in 2007. John also leaves behind one sister, Hilda, and his niece Marilyn who still reside in England; as well as his 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who were the love of his life.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 9, from 9:00am until 10:30am at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Rd. Whiting, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45am in the All Sts. Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, Whiting.
