Obituary of Elmer Cordes Martens, Jr.
Elmer Cordes "Skip" Martens, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 4th after a lengthy illness. His loving wife of 56 years, Theresa (Beaumont) was by his side.
Skip was born in Glen Rock, NJ on May 3, 1932 to Elmer Cordes Martens, Sr. and Margaret (Fisher) Martens. He grew up in Glen Rock along with his sister, Marilyn (Oakley) who predeceased him. He later moved to Oakland, NJ to raise his family and retired to Whiting, NJ in 2014.
Skip was an avid hunter and fisherman with a cabin in the Catskills. He enjoyed being a member of fast-pitch softball teams and bowling leagues throughout his adult life. Skip was a U.S. Navy veteran who served his country during the Korean War. He remained involved in Navy activities and traveled around the country to organize and attend numerous reunions. He was an electrical contractor who owned and ran his own business for 40 years. Skip was a lifetime Yankee fan who enjoyed nothing better than a few beers in front of the TV with a good baseball game.
Skip is survived by his devoted wife, Theresa, and four children, Anne Molinaro, Kristen Murphy, Eric Martens and his wife, Nicole Koropatkin and Aimee Rumont and her husband, Michael. Skip had eight grandchildren, who he loved dearly, Allison, Alex, Hailey, Kirsten, Caroline, Nicholas, Ian and Emma.
A private memorial service will be held on a future date.
