John Maass

Obituary of John C. Maass

On February 12, 2021, we lost our patriarch, John Maass, to a sudden event, 6 weeks short of his 100th birthday. Prior to this unexpected and unfortunate event, John lived a full and healthy life, most recently enjoying spending much of his time with his loving partner, Eva Lakowitz. John was a trustee of Crestwood Village 6. He was always involved in administration and multiple activities which he ran out of the clubhouse down the street. Although John never had children of his own, he was the adored leader of a large family. He was omnipresent at all family vacations and events. He was born in Germany and came to the US at 6 months of age. In 1938 he graduated from Richmond High School. Soon thereafter, he started working at National Biscuit Company (Nabisco). At Nabisco he met Agnes O’Brien. They dated for a few years until John was drafted into the Army in 1944. Prior to boot camp, Agnes and John married. John was stationed at Camp Beale in San Bernadino California. Agnes traveled cross country to join him. After a tour at Fort Collins Washington, they returned to NJ and John returned to Nabisco and rose to Director of Distribution until his retirement in 1983. Upon retirement, John and Agnes moved to Crestwood Village truly enjoying his post-retirement years. He became involved in many activities, especially BINGO. Agnes passed away in 2000. In 2010, John married Rachelle Spellman. They both became heavily involved in clubhouse activities and traveled incessantly domestically and abroad. Rachelle passed away in 2013. John was the figurehead of all family events. He enjoyed his Mercedes sedan, his VODKA straight up, and his steaks RARE. He will be missed very much and remembered dearly as one of the greatest men to ever live due to his demeanor and love of life. He will be missed by his partner; Eva, his nephew, Arthur O’Brien and his niece, Frieda Wnorowski. Stepsons, Charles and Stephen and his wife, Nancy; step-daughter, Nancy Prull and her husband, Kevin; the loves of his life, his grandchildren, Alexandra and Katherine Prull, Morgan, Lauren, Charlie, Kristen and Stephen Spellman. No immediate services are planned. However, a celebration of life will be held at a further date at Crestwood Village 6 clubhouse. Any donations can be made to RWJ/StBarnabasHospice.
