Obituary of Ann E. Murphy

   Ann E. Murphy, 95, of Whiting, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus in Lakewood.  Ann was born and raised in Elizabeth, NJ.  She graduated from St. Patrick's Grammar and High Schools.  In 1974 Ann entered Kean College, in 1978 she graduated having earned a Bachelor of Academics Degree as Teacher of Handicapped Children; a Certificate of Elementary School Education and a Certificate of Language to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  In 1980 Ann received a Masters Degree in Guidance and Student Personnel Services.

   Among her life experiences are:  employment with Prudential, Singer's War Movement as a milling machine operator, Georke's Department Store, Brites Brewery and a CCD Teacher at Blessed Sacrament.  Her employment with the Elizabeth Board of Education started in 1968 as a payroll clerk/secretary for the summer school program and progressed to secretary at Abraham Lincoln School #14 and a Special Education Teacher at Elmora School #12.  She also taught an adult education course, "English for the Foreign Born."  Ann retired in 1989 but continued on as a substitute teacher in Elizabeth.  After moving to Whiting in 1990, she was employed as a bookkeeper at Habit Calibrating Services.

   Ann served as a Lector at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Whiting and was a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society.  She served as the Secretary of the Elizabeth Education Association.  She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Council 253, Elizabeth, the Whiting Irish American Club, the Union County Irish American Association, the Union County Division of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and served as the Secretary for Division One Ocean County Division of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Nugents Association.

   Ann took great pleasure in singing.  It was a means of expression and has been a pleasure and comfort to her children and grandchildren all of their lives.  She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle affectionado. She was named the 2000 Irish Woman of the Year by the Union County Irish American Association and was recognized in 1996 for participation in the Seaside St. Patrick's Day Parade.

   After retiring, Ann and Frank had their two "dates" a week at the Crab's Claw Inn where Ann enjoyed participating in the sing-a-longs.  Since then she continued going as often as possible.

   Ann was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Francis X. Murphy in 1999, her son, Vincent dePaul Murphy in 2015, her parents, Thomas and Margaret Flynn and her siblings, Mary Fischbach, Gertrude Stefanik, Rose Swain, Margaret Szotak, Geraldine Gluck, Richard Flynn, Thomas Flynn, Dolores Mitricska, Dennis Flynn, Frances Dickson and Edward Flynn.  She is survived by her sons, Francis X. Murphy, II and Timothy S. Murphy; her daughters, Mary Ann Murphy, Margaret M. Misdom, Roberta M. Murphy, Kathleen M. Mendes, Brigid M. Sisk, Sheila M. Soares, Elizabeth R. Habit and Madeline M. Kelly; her sister, Catherine Huffenus; 29 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.  She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

   The Murphy family will welcome visitors Wednesday, October 17th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, October 18th at 10:45 a.m. at the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting.  Interment will follow at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
