Obituary of Elizabeth Mary Casey Andersen

Elizabeth Mary Casey Andersen, of Whiting, New Jersey, passed away on June 7, 2016, at 4:30 a.m., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She leaves behind Carl Andersen, her husband of 69 years, also of Whiting. They were married in Woodside, New York, on August 17, 1946. One of three children, she was predeceased by her brother, Richard, and her sister, Mary, as well as two grandchildren, Edmund and Gary Christopher. Her sister Peggy Coughlin survives her, as do her children, Edmund Andersen of Union, Missouri; John Andersen of Martin’s Creek, Pennsylvania; Marie Andersen Dean of Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania; Thomas Andersen of Mooresville, North Carolina; Paul Andersen of St. Louis, Missouri; and Robert Andersen of Boonton, New Jersey. In addition to her own children, Elizabeth has 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Born in Bronx, New York, on December 1, 1920, to Edmund Casey and Mary Cody, Elizabeth, known to her friends and family as “Betty,” spent her formative years in the Bronx and at Rocky Point, New York, where her parents owned a bungalow. Betty’s love for the water was reflected in her choice of vacation spots-Long Beach Island, where she and her husband spent summers with the children when they were young and New Port Richey, Florida, where Betty and Carl resided as “snowbirds” for many years. She enjoyed going on cruises, and she and Carl took pleasure in visiting the Caribbean, Bermuda and Hawaii. Her work history comprised a number of years at Metropolitan Life, for which she received recognition as President of the Metropolitan Alumni Association and where she met her husband to be. Later, she served as Executive Director of the American Cancer Society for a decade. “Betty liked to run things,” Carl reminisced. “And she was good at everything she did.” Elizabeth Mary Casey Andersen, you will be missed by all who loved you and who you have left behind. Visitation will be on Friday, June 10th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Rd., Whiting. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 11th at 10:45 a.m. at the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting.
