Obituary of William "Bill" Harmon
William Anthony Harmon was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 4, 1919. He worked as an accountant for 20 years for the Printing Ink Department of Cities Service. In 1970, he transferred to Cincinnati, Ohio to become Accounts Payable Manager for the Printing Ink Division when it was acquired by Borden Chemical Company. He retired in 1981 and moved in with his brother, Joe, in Pine Ridge at Crestwood, Whiting, NJ. After being certified by the Library of Congress, he became a volunteer Braillist for the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired for eight years. Most of his assignments consisted of transcribing textbooks into Braille for blind school students.
He was an art lover and frequented the art museums pf New York and Cincinnati, and made a trip to Europe to visit the museums of Paris, Rome, Florence and England. Although, not an active artist himself, he was a member of the Crestwood Artist Guild for many years.
In 1953, he played softball for Columbian Carbon Co., when they won the Fast-Pitch Industrial League Championship of Brooklyn, NY. An avid golfer, he played for the Deerfield Golf Club for three years and the Pine Ridge Golf Club for 22 years.
He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He also worked on the church's Food Drive for many years.
Surviving are his two cousins, Catherine Ahlstrom of East Williston, NY and Barbara Barrett of Boca Raton, FL and numerous secondary cousins.
Calling hours are from 2 to 5 p.m., Friday and from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10 a.m. at the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting.
