Eleanor Devlin

Obituary of Eleanor Devlin

Miss Eleanor T. Devlin passed away on April 9, the day before her 90th birthday, at Community Medical Center in Toms River. Miss Devlin worked for Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. of New York and was an officer's assistant when she retired in 1976, after 40 years of service. She was born in Jersey City and left there in 1978 when she moved to Whiting, N.J. She was the daughter of the late Mary and Thomas Devlin. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph, and is survived by brothers Thomas, Hugh, and Edward, and 12 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. At a time when Wall Street was a strictly male bastion, Miss Devlin was entrusted with the personal accounts of celebrities and dignitaries at Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. She loved to travel with her friends, enjoying trips to Ireland, Hawaii, England, and Spain, sending her nieces and nephews beautifully handwritten postcards along the way. Miss Devlin had a sharp mind for numbers. Throughout her life and into her 90th year, friends turned to her for help with complicated financial and health forms, knowing she would always oblige. She warmed a room with her ready laugh, bright smile and innate sense of style. She had a special flair for wearing the perfect hat, always adorned by a beautiful brooch. Miss Devlin was a devoted daughter, sister, and aunt, who loved her nieces and nephews unconditionally in the truest sense of the word. She loved crosswords, read The Star-Ledger every day, and never missed saying her morning prayers. She also was an excellent photographer, who recorded all family events with creativity and care. Funeral arrangements are by the Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ. Viewing will be Sunday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, N.J.
