Obituary of Jr. Nielson
The Rev. Msgr. Thomas A. Nielson, Jr., 80, of Whiting, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at home. He was born and raised in New York City, NY. He moved to Whiting in 2003. Msgr. Nielson was ordained a priest on May 30, 1959. He served as parochial vicar and Master of Ceremonies at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City, NY for 29 years, retiring in 2003. He also served as parochial vicar of St. Joseph's, Greenwich Village, 1959-1967; Sacred Heart, Staten Island, 1967-1969; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Manhattan, 1969-1974. From 1974 to 1976, Msgr. Nielson served as Spiritual Director of the Legion of Mary, Archdiocese of New York. He served as Chaplain for St. Ansgar's Scandinavian Catholic League and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, New York City.
He is survived by one sister, Joan Locasio of New Bern, NC; one niece; one nephew and his dear friend, Eileen Callaghan of Whiting.
Msgr. Nielson will lie in repose from 2 to 6 p.m., Monday, April 22nd and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 23rd at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:45 a.m., Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Interment will follow at St. Raymond's Cemetery, Bronx, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, Whiting, NJ.
