Obituary of Maura Tierney
MAURA KELLY TIERNEY, 71, of Cedar Glen Lakes, Whiting, MANCHESTER, died Monday, February 11, at home. Mrs. Tierney was born in Galway, Ireland. After moving from Ireland in 1957, she lived most of her life in New Brunswick, NJ. She lived in the Catskills, NY before moving to Whiting in 1996. Mrs. Tierney attended colleges in Ireland, England and the United States. She was an accomplished singer and musician, excelling on the piano and accordion. She taught piano and Irish step dancing and recorded an Irish record album in 1986 with the help of her good friend, Dermot O'Brien. She was, also, a published poet. She was a 2nd Grade Teacher in the Catholic School System for many years. She also worked in the Admissions Office at Rutgers Medical School, Piscataway and hosted her own Irish Radio Program on WRSU, at Rutgers and on a radio station in the Catskills. She worked as a phone operator for Verizon in the Catskills. She was a member and past director of the Glen-Aires Musical Group, Cedar Glen Lakes, a member of the Creative Writers Group of Cedar Glen Lakes, organizer of the TARA Association and the Brunswick Shamrock Group of New Brunswick. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, and a member of the church's choir. She always remained very proud of her Irish heritage and she returned to her homeland to open arms several times over the years. She was predeceased by her husband, James, in 2006 and her brother, Thomas Kelly, in 2001. Surviving are three daughters and their spouses, Kathleen Geraghty of Metuchen, Margaret and John Brozyna of Jackson and Patricia and Dan Cottrell of Howell; three step- daughters, Maureen Welsh of Hamilton, Siobhan Costantini of Bordentown and Kathleen Pointsett of Hamilton; two brothers, Eamon Kelly of Queens, NY and Hilary Kelly of Hawaii and seven grandchildren, Todd, Wade and Daniel Taylor, Daniel and Dylan Cottrell and Kayla and Keri Brozyna. Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday morning from 10 to 11:45 a.m. at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting followed by a funeral liturgy at 12 noon in the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting Interment will be at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
