Obituary of Sr. Cairns
William J. Cairns, Sr., 83, of Whiting, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at The Pines at Whiting. Born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, he lived in Hazlet before moving to Whiting 20 years ago. William was the general manager for Harold Van Wagner & Son Insurance Co, Manhattan, NY. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was the Commissioner of the Monmouth County Boy Scouts, past President of the Hazlet Republican Club, a Trustee of Crestwood Village II and a member of the Zipper Club. William was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting and an usher at the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. William and his wife, Mary were volunteers at Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary Cairns in 2010. He is survived by four children, William J. Cairns, II and his wife, Mary, Gregory Cairns and his wife, Marie, Michael Cairns and his companion, Stacie and Doreen Cairns and her husband, Jim; one niece, Patricia Regan and her husband, Charles; one nephew, Arthur Gelston and his wife, Barbara; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10:45 a.m. at the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Rd., Whiting. Arrangements are under the direction of Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, Whiting.
