Obituary of Bartley Eckhardt

Bartley G. "Bart" Eckhardt, 83, died May 16, 2014 of natural causes at his home in Whiting, NJ. Bart received an A.S. degree from SUNY Morrisville and served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955 as a Torpedoman 2/C. For most of his professional life, Bart was a self-employed interior contractor in New York City. He was a craftsman of the highest order. Bart put others first in everything he did. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid boater, fisherman and wooden boat aficionado. He was active in Scouting with Troop 140, BSA as Scoutmaster from 1970-1975, and saw many young men through the rigors of becoming an Eagle Scout, including his son, Bart and grandsons, Jason and Eric Eckhardt. Bart is survived by his wonderful and devoted wife of 61 years, Ilse. Bart and Ilse lived in Tenafly, NJ for 45 years where they were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Tenafly. They retired to Crestwood Village in Whiting, NJ in 2000, where they were very active in the Village V community. Bart is also survived by his son, Bart (wife Bonnie Johnson and daughter Vaughn) of Landisville, PA; grandson, Jason (wife Anna, son Graham and daughter Harlan) of Memphis TN; grandson Eric (wife Claire, son Owen and daughter Estelle) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; granddaughter Karly (husband Dean Quadir) of Columbus, OH; brother William Eckhardt (wife Anita, daughters Julie, Judy, Jill and their families) and sister Helen Ruffalo (daughters Maria, Liz and their families). A Memorial Service will be held on Monday June 2, 2014, 1:00 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, Whiting, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
