Obituary of Anna Hlinka
Anna Hlinka (nee Vislocky) of Whiting, NJ died peacefully at the Whiting Health Care Center on April 24, 2014.
She was born on July 19, 1922 in Litmanova, Czechoslovakia, and lived there until she emigrated to New York in 1939. As a young bride who left her husband behind to fight in WWII, she made a life for herself and her newborn daughter amidst other East European immigrants on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Following the arrival of her husband in 1947, she gave birth to a son and shortly thereafter, moved to upstate NY, where she owned and operated a restaurant/inn. This was followed by long-term employment as a beloved chef at St. Vladimir's Russian Orthodox Seminary in Crestwood, NY and then as a supervisor of housekeeping at King's College in Briarcliff Manor, NY.
Anna is survived by her daughter, Mary (late John Chobor); her son, Michael; four grandchildren, Anna Marie, Karen (late Bartholomew Lawson), John (Jennifer Landsman) and Christopher (Ashley Knight) and five great-grandchildren, (Bart, Nicholas, Mackenzie, Isabel and Katia). She will be remembered for her genuine and profound faith in God and her love of and dedication to her family.
Visitation will be Sunday,April 27th from 7 to 9 p.m. at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 28th at 10:30 a.m. at the Orthodox Christian Church of the Annunciation, Brick. Interment will follow at Whiting Memorial Park.
