Obituary of Vincent Szemis
Vincent J Szemis, 89 of Whiting, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014. Born in Trenton, he lived in the Trenton/Bordentown area until retiring to Whiting in 1985. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. Vince attended Rider College earning a degree in Business Administration. He was employed for 32 years with the State of New Jersey as a funds manager in the Treasury Department and was named Suggester of the Year in 1980 for a suggestion that saved the State thousands of dollars. Since retiring to Whiting, Vince was a CARES driver and an AARP tax counselor. He enjoyed many activities in the Crestwood Villages including bocci, ballroom dancing, square dancing and playing bridge.
Vince is survived by his wife, Joan, of 60 years; his brother, Kenneth and wife, Marion; his sister, Mary Tazartes; his sons, Edward and wife, Christine and Daniel and wife, Mary; two granddaughters, Nina and Melanie and three grandsons, Kevin, David and Stephen.
Cremation will be private. A Memorial Mass will be offered Friday, Jan. 31st at 9:00 a.m. at the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting. Inurnment will follow at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. Arrangements are under the direction of Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, Whiting. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834 or Grace Hospice, 105 Fieldcrest Avenue, Suite 402, Edison, NJ 08837.
