Obituary of Sr. Horn
Russell J. Horn, Sr., 78, of Bloxom, VA, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD. Mr. Horn was born in Jersey City, NJ and attended St. Mary's Grammar School in Nutley, NJ. He and three friends sold enough war stamps to purchase a jeep for the war effort. They then wrote to President Roosevelt requesting a ride in a jeep. The request was granted and a jeep was sent to the school. He attended Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic, NJ where he was Editor-In-Chief of the school newspaper. He attended Merrimack College in North Andover, MA and received his Master's Degree in Business Management from Beacon College, Washington, D.C.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army, becoming a combat engineer. While on active duty, he received two appointments to the U.S. Military Academy, one through a competitive enlisted exam and an appointment from Congressman Peter Rodino. He was a cadet instructor teaching field fortifications and mine warfare.
He served as a management consultant to Pirelli Tire Co. at its London, England operations in addition to other corporations throughout the U.S. He joined the Phoenix Steel Corp. of Claymont, DE and Phoenixville, PA, serving as manager of production control and assistant plant manager of the Phoenixville works. He owned and operated the Hiddin Inn in South Kortright, NY. He joined the federal service, serving as installation club manager and chief of the Community Operations Division at several locations in the U.S. and Gemany. He completed his career as a contract specialist.
He is survived by three sons, Russell, Jr. of Point Pleasant, NJ, Thomas of Leander, TX and Gregory of Ohio; two brothers, John Horn and Gerard Horn; one sister, Carole Morton; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 16th from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:45 a.m. at the All Saints Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting. Interment will be at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
