Obituary of Dr. Frederick Hummel
Dr. Frederick "Fritz" Wm. Hummel, 98, of Whiting, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at Crestwood Manor LTC. Born in New York City on March 3, 1915, he lived in Brick, NJ, and briefly in Vermont, before moving to Whiting in 1980. He attended Asbury Park High School, finishing in 1932 as Valedictorian of his class, before going on to Princeton University with a full scholarship, where he graduated with honors in chemistry in 1936. Since then, he maintained an enthusiastic relationship with his alma mater (to put it mildly!) and at recent Reunions held the distinction of being the "oldest marching alumnus." As a loyal "son of Nassau Hall," Fritz also served as Class Treasurer for the Princeton Alumni Association. Go Tiger!!! Upon graduation, he went to Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, again with a full scholarship, graduating in 1940. At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the US Army as a medic, serving three years in Australia and New Guinea, returning in 1945 as a Captain.
After residencies at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and Bellevue Hospital in New York City, Dr. Hummel began practicing surgery at Fitkin Hospital in Neptune (now Jersey Shore MC ), eventually moving full-time to Point Pleasant Hospital, where he served as Chief of Staff in the late 1960's. For many years he also practiced general medicine in Brick, as well as serving as the school physician for Brick Twp. High School.
Fritz is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ruth Conklin Hummel, also an alumna of Asbury Park HS, where they originally met. They became reacquainted in college (on a blind date) and married in 1940. Also surviving him are daughters, Suzanne Hummel-Bell and her husband, Jeff, and Sylvia Hummel and her partner Thomas H. Dent, and a son, Karl F. Hummel and his wife Abby. In addition, he is survived by five grandchildren, Gabriella, Kathleen, Kari, Ruth, and Helen, and three great-grandchildren, Ciara, Sinead, and Sawyer.
Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, is in charge of the arrangements. His cremation is private.
